It is official. Breck Eisner has left the director’s chair for the Creature From the Black Lagoon remake. He is currently finishing up his film The Crazies and is attached to the Flash Gordon reboot, but it is unclear thus far why he has left Creature. Gary Ross, writer and producer of the film is still developing it, and Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment are now searching for a new director.

I just re-watched this movie over the weekend, and I have to say it still holds a special place in my heart. I hope they stay true to the spirit of the original, but update it well like what The Wolfman remake seems to be doing. Here’s a quote from Arrow in the Head that Eisner made a while back about what direction he was going to take it in:

“I want it to be scary. It’s a bigger movie, so it’s not an R rated scary, it’s gonna be a PG-13 scary. Creature takes you to a place you’ve never been before, it’s one of the last untamed places on the edge of the Earth where you find this creature that has been living and hiding there forever, basically. It’s definitely going for a dark adventure tone, but I want it to be scary.”

I hope they stick with this idea. Update it for a modern audience, but not like the recent Mummy movies did. I want a scary Creature, kind of like the “Fluke Man” from The X-Files season 2 episode The Host.
