I’ve been craving a good take on the Dracula story for quite some time. I felt the last real good one was Bram Stoker’s Dracula back in 1992. Now it looks like I may get just what I have been looking for, as an announcement was made at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday that Italian director Dario Argento (Suspiria) will be directing a version of Dracula – in 3D!

Shock ‘Till You Drop reports that the film will be a period piece filmed in Italy that will be “a faithful translation of the Bram Stoker novel.” Roberto Girolamo and Gianni Paolucci will produce.

Argento not only directed the cult favorite Suspiria, but also directed an Italian version of The Phantom of the Opera in 1998 (Il fantasma dell’opera). I have never personally seen his films, but he does have a rabid fan base. So, for him to do a take on the Dracula story sounds like a great idea to me. I am not sure about how I feel about the 3D aspect of it, but at the same time I have no idea what Argento’s vision is for the film so it could go either way.
