Up until today, not much was known about Michael Bay’s Transformers 4. We already knew that it would star Mark Walberg and Jack Reynor, with Brenton Thwaites and Nicola Peltz, and that the story will pick up four years later after the battle that took place in Chicago in the previous film, Tranformers: Dark of the Moon.

Now, after a press release from the Michigan Film Office revealed today that the film has been awarded a tax incentive of $20 million to shoot in Detroit, with a projection of approximately $81 million of in-state expenditures, a nice official plot synopsis for the film has been made public as well. Official Plot Synopsis (via Michigan Film Office):

As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.

I’m no Transformers expert, but could this “ancient, powerful Transformer” be Unicron, the massive robot planet from the original 1986 animated film? Whatever the case, we finally have a basic grasp of what Transformers 4 will be about.

Both Transformers and Transformers: Dark of the Moon shot various scenes in the Detroit area, so this will mark the third time a Transformers film has shot in Michigan. The press release doesn’t seem to be quite clear on whether or not the entire film will shoot there, but it seems to be that much more will be shot in Michigan this time around than what has been previously done with the other films.
