The X-Files: Fight the Future

Today may be the start of a new beginning for fans of the extremely successful Fox TV series The X-Files (1993-2002).

Fans all over the world have been waiting and hoping for years now that there just might be hope for a third X-Files theatrical film, even though the second feature, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, wasn’t as successful at the box office as 20th Century Fox had hoped it would be back in 2008 (remind us all again, Fox, why you decided to release it only ONE WEEK after The Dark Knight?!!). All these years later, fans still want closure to the ever popular alien colonization plot from the series.

While a third feature film seems to be looking less and less likely, Fox chairman and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman confirmed at the 2015 Winter TCA Press Tour that there have been discussions with X-Files series creator Chris Carter about a possible revival of The X-Files – but for television, and that they want David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson back! Read on for more!

If you can recall, it had been discussed in years past of Fox producing a feature film of the hit series 24 starring Kiefer Sutherland, but that never happened. While it still could, they decided to revive the show last summer for a 12-episode limited series called 24: Live Another Day, which proved to be very successful. So naturally, it makes sense that they would consider reviving other Fox properties in a similar fashion.

“I think it’s been reported and it’s true that we’ve had some conversations on X-Files. We’re hopeful we’ll bring that back at some point,” Newman said during the Fox panel. Afterward, Newman elaborated on the possible return of the series, saying, “if this happens, it will be with David and Gillian reprising their roles. Chris [Carter] is interested, both David and Gillian are interested. Scheduling it is very different. David has his shows and Gillian is doing something in the UK, so it’s a little hard. I really don’t know how fast it can happen because of that. But there are ongoing conversations happening.”

It is really a natural decision to have Chris Carter return, since his schedule has been freed up ever since Amazon.com canned his online series The After (although there’s still that Area 51-themed series he was working on with Gale Anne Hurd that is still floating out there). However, it will indeed be difficult to get Duchovny and Anderson back for a TV series, even it if is just a limited “miniseries” event like 24: Live Another Day.

If they do return, it raises so many questions. While I am sure Duchovny and Anderson would sign on to be a part of the show for a good long while, will they perhaps pass on the torch to other FBI Agents to investigate the paranormal? Will this limited series wrap up the alien colonization plot from the original show, since it was originally intended to be wrapped up in a feature film? Will they address it at all? The possibilities are endless. Who knows, perhaps if this revival happens, it’ll bring in more of an audience to better justify a third feature film.

Only time will tell, and that’s if this even happens in the first place. Personally, I’d welcome the return of Agents Mulder and Scully in any form, whether it’d be in a theatrical release, or on television (heck, I’m even enjoying the Season 10 comic series). Either way, the potential for the series to return is just too good to ignore, and Fox knows this. It seems that it is really only a matter of time before the X-Files get “reopened,” so to speak.
