About every few months, another interview with David Duchovny, Chris Carter, or some other cast or crew member of The X-Files surfaces discussing the possibility of a third film in the franchise, particularly one that would conclude the ever-popular “alien colonization” mythology storyline that the TV series first set into motion in the early 90s.
This time, we’re back at it with Gillian Anderson, who recently commented on the matter in an interview with IGN, saying that it’s possible the third film would not be about the alien mythology, and that, if the film happens, it probably won’t be until 2016. Read on for more!
While interviewing for her new series Crisis in Chicago (debuting this March), Gillian said, “I’m sure it is being thought out. Looking at my schedule it’s probably unlikely to happen before 2016, but that’s the way things go.” And as far as the film continuing the alien mythology, she isn’t sure if it would or not, since she doesn’t get involved in any specifics. But she did say that it might be “too late” to pursue the 2012 alien colonization story, and that she is “not sure people would be interested in that anymore.”
Yeah, sure Gillian. Whatever you say.
The bottom line is that the fans are still VERY interested, and so is the cast and crew. As IGN points out, X-Files creator Chris Carter has recently commented on his plans to address the alien plot in some way, even though 2012 (the year the aliens were supposed to have invaded) has come and gone. “The date (which was December 22, 2012 in the series) has passed, and that is something we wouldn’t ignore,” Carter explained in a recent interview with Empire. “For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.”
Not only that, but the plot has sort of continued, in some way, through comic books. Just last year, Chris Carter collaborated on The X-Files Season 10 series, which takes place after the second movie and goes into the alien mythology. It may not be necessarily how they end up going about it if they ever get a third film off the ground, but it proves Carter still has an interest in wrapping up that plot.
So, even though Gillian Anderson is one of the stars of the show and movies, it is probably wise to just take what she says with a grain of salt, since she really isn’t involved in possible future storylines for the series. But it is entirely possible that, if we were to get a third film, that it won’t happen until at least 2016, since she does know her work schedule.
In the meantime, fans should definitely check out The X-Files Season 10 comic series currently available on Amazon.com!
