It has been a while since we’ve heard any news on a sequel to 2008’s Rambo, and when we do, it’s always something different. First, there was the idea that Rambo would get a little more sci-fi, with the lead character hunting down genetically engineered instinctual killers. Then, that idea changed into something more traditional for the franchise, with Rambo heading over the U.S.-Mexico border to rescue a young girl from human traffickers and drug lords. Finally, Sylvester Stallone went on record as saying that he was “99% sure” that Rambo wouldn’t be returning – at least in another film, that is.
As it turns out, Rambo may indeed return after all, as Entertainment One and Nu Image are currently developing a Rambo TV series, with Stallone in talks to join the project “on a creative level,” and word is circulating that he may even star in the series. Read on for more!
The series is obviously in the early stages of development, and absolutely nothing has been made official, so Rambo fans should not get too excited just yet, especially since any previous attempts to continue the franchise ended up falling through.
Personally, while I love the character, and the last film was a great throwback to the 80s action genre, I really just prefer Stallone’s previous stance on the character, in that we should just probably leave well enough alone. It is really difficult to imagine just exactly where the franchise could go, especially after the ending the previous Rambo was given. Perhaps he could have one more go-around in a film, but a TV series? Where do you take an action hero like Rambo every week? I won’t rule it out, but it seems to me that Rambo is just fine where he is.
Of course, if this actually happens, I’ll most likely check it out. Perhaps it’ll explore what 24 did, in that it will follow the lead character on one mission per season (but of course not necessarily over 24-hour time spans). I could get into that…
