Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful is certainly a visual treat once we reach the actual Land of Oz with Oscar Diggs, actor James Franco’s character who eventually becomes the great and powerful wizard we all know from the original 1939 MGM musical. Every sequence is filled with color and beauty created by some of the most talented artists in both CGI and practical set design.
However, even before we reach the colorful widescreen portion of the film, we are treated with a delightful black and white opening credits sequence in a 4:3 aspect ratio (like the 1939 film) that is quite creative in its visual and musical presentation. It really serves as a great introduction into the kind of film we are in for when going into it, and lets us know that the creators behind Oz seem to have an incredible passion for the source material, whether it’d be the L. Frank Baum books or the previously-released Oz films.
Today, Disney has made this sequence available for all to watch online. It simply is great fun to watch, whether you have already seen the film or not. Check it out below!
Official Synopsis:
When Oscar Diggs, a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot – fame and fortune are his for the taking – that is until he meets three witches, Theodora, Evanora and Glinda, who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity – and even a bit of wizardry – Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
