For X-Philes who have been waiting patiently to see what happens after The X-Files: I Want to Believe, they will be getting the next best thing to a third feature film very soon.
IDW, the company behind 2009’s incredibly awesome X-Files/30 Days of Night crossover comic series (co-published by DC/Wildstorm), has announced that they are creating a whole new line of comics for The X-Files, picking up right where I Want to Believe left off. Not only that, but the company is also reprinting the classic Topps and DC/Wildstorm X-Files comics that ran sporadically from 1995-2009. Read on for official statements from IDW and Fox staff members.

Jeffrey Godsick, President of Fox Consumer Products –
“The fans of THE X-FILES have remained loyal to the series since its conclusion. What better way to continue the show’s legacy and give back to them than through new stories in a different medium. IDW has worked with a number of our Fox properties, and we know they’re going to do great things with these iconic characters.”
Greg Goldstein, IDW President/Chief Operating Officer –
“THE X-FILES is a classic property that helped redefine fans’ expectations for the science-fiction and horror genres. The possibilities for new comic stories are virtually unlimited!”
Chris Ryall, IDW Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief –
“Few shows have captured the zeitgeist and fans’ imaginations like THE X-FILES, and fewer shows still have left people hungry for more in the way this one did. Our new series will be picking up where the second film left off, which will hopefully be as exciting for fans to read as it is for us to develop.”
While this may not be the answer that fans have been looking for in terms of continuing The X-Files in a third feature film, this is a great sign of revival for the 20th Century Fox property. If this series doesn’t end up leading fans to the conclusion of the series’ complex alien mythology plotline on the big screen, perhaps the story will still be written and made public in illustrated form.
On a side note, it is an interesting coincidence that I wrote The X-Files producer Frank Spotnitz about this very subject last year…
