After winning a legal battle against the heirs of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster, Warner Brothers is now able to proceed with making a Justice League film, which is now being pushed for a Summer 2015 release. Much like Marvel’s The Avengers, Justice League will team up famous comic book heroes to battle evil, but from the DC Comics universe, with Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman being among the group. More on this story after the jump!
While Warner Brothers has one of the most successful film franchises based on a comic book character with The Dark Knight Trilogy, they are quite a bit behind the likes of the Disney/Marvel lineup, which includes a number of successful films like the Iron Man movies, Thor, Captain America, and more recently, The Avengers, which made over $623 million in the U.S. alone. With the lackluster performance of 2011’s Green Lantern at the box office, along with films like Wonder Woman and The Flash still lingering in development, Warner Brothers currently looks to their upcoming release of director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel next year along with Justice League in 2015 to compete with their Marvel rival. Something tells me, however, that DC will still have a hard time competing with Marvel’s historically more popular characters, especially with The Avengers 2 also slated for release in Summer 2015.
No word on whether or not Justice League will feature the current Ryan Reynolds incarnation of Green Lantern, or Man of Steel‘s Henry Cavill as Superman. We do know that it won’t contain the same Batman portrayed by Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Trilogy, so it could go either way. We may not know for sure until casting announcements have been made. In the meantime, feel free to speculate…
