Men in Black 3 makes its debut in theaters nationwide May 25th, and finally director Barry Sonnenfeld (director of all three MIB movies) has made himself available to talk more about the film. MTV sat down with the director today to get some details, and it appears that this third film will not only conclude the trilogy, but also set up the franchise for a reboot. Read on for details!
From MTV:
The fantastic thing about “Men in Black 3″ is that it totally closes out the trilogy, it answers questions that you didn’t even know you should be asking, it leaves you emotionally warm and sad and happy, and it could also reboot the franchise. But I can’t even begin to tell you how to interpret all of that. [Laughs] But I would say this: If your interpretation is that “Men in Black 4″ will only star the worm guys and Frank the pug, you are wrong.
One of the main comments I have heard about the MIB movies is that the second film just didn’t pack the same punch that the first film did, although I have never understood why it is considered that much of an inferior film. People I have had conversations with just seem to hate that movie for some reason. Perhaps it was a bit too short in its running time, but I always enjoyed Men in Black 2, despite it not being as good as the first. Nevertheless, based on Sonnenfeld’s comments, it sounds like Men in Black 3 will make up for that by harkening back more to the spirit of the first film and also delivering a more emotional story and surprising ending this time around.
It is also interesting to hear that it sets up a possible “reboot,” although it sounds like it would continue with main characters we already know. It is probably safe to assume that the “surprise ending” Sonnenfeld talks about in the interview will reveal that detail.
Head on over to MTV to read more about the difficulties of scripting the film, non-spoiler details on the story (including the villain), and why Sonnenfeld felt it was time to return to the franchise.
