Many of you are probably aware that every year during the Super Bowl, new TV spots air for some of the year’s most anticipated movies. Last year proved to be one of the best in terms of previews of films with tons of hype behind them, like Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.
With this year, however, I feel it needs to be said that it was disappointing that there were not as many trailers for highly anticipated films. There were a few, like The Avengers, John Carter, and The Hunger Games. But somehow, previews for lesser-hyped films such as The Lorax, Act of Valor and The Dictator made their way into the Super Bowl time slot. What’s more (and let’s be honest), even big-budget special effects movies like Battleship and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which also earned TV spots during the game, aren’t really all that anticipated.
There are much bigger, more anticipated releases out there – such as Men in Black 3, Dark Shadows, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Dark Knight Rises or Prometheus – that I am positive people would have much preferred to see previews for. Sure, the films I just knocked for taking up the time slot might end up being great, but it is surprising which previews ended up airing. In my opinion, it made watching the Super Bowl commercials a bit less exciting than it should have been (although, to be fair, they did air an ad for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace 3-D, which was totally cool by me).
