While the Resident Evil franchise has never been truly “great,” there was a time when the films held a certain guilty pleasure appeal to them in terms of balls-to-the-walls action, cool zombie kills, and stories that were enjoyable on a “popcorn movie” level. But that all went away with Resident Evil: Afterlife in 2010. The movie just fell more flat to me than the other ones, despite it’s zombie action. It was simply a disappointing followup to the story that was set up in Resident Evil: Extinction, where we were left with a possible hope of surviving the zombie world in Alaska, and a group of Alice clones ready to conquer said zombies and the Umbrella corporation. Needless to say, I lost interest in the franchise.
However, after seeing the trailer for director Paul W.S. Anderson’s fifth and latest movie in the series, Resident Evil: Retribution, it appears that there just might be hope for the franchise after all. Michelle Rodriguez and Sienna Guillory are both returning as Rain Ocampo and Jill Valentine, respectively, and the trailer really does a great job at making the movie look like it will be a welcome return to what made the series fun to watch in the first place. Yes, this is just a trailer, and the end result could still be disastrous. But then again, it is possible that Anderson got a clue this time around. Either way, the trailer is worth a look. Hit the jump to watch!
