Bilbo Baggins

Tons of trailers have been popping up online in the past couple of weeks, whetting our appetites for some of the most anticipated movie releases of 2012 – including films like Men in Black III, John Carter, The Expendables 2, and, of course, The Dark Knight Rises. Now, while The Dark Knight Rises certainly tops that list, in my opinion it doesn’t hold a candle to the first trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Part 1 of Peter Jackson’s epic two-part film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved story.

Yes, the trailer just debuted late last night online, which means you can now finally get your first look at Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves as they begin their quest across Middle Earth to defeat Smaug the dragon and reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor! This is not just a teaser either, and believe me when I say that this is truly the movie trailer to end all trailers. Hit the jump to check it out!

Official Synopsis:

“The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakensheild. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever … Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Head on over to Apple to watch in HD, and don’t forget to check out the trailer in 3-D with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s The Adventures of Tin Tin in 3-D!

If you didn’t get goosebumps from watching this, you have no soul. This has got to be one of the best trailers I’ve seen for a film in a long time. The only complaint I have is that the trailer should have been more specific in telling the audience that The Hobbit will be split into two films, and state the release dates for each. Other than that, this is absolutely phenomenal, and I cannot wait to catch this in 3-D next December!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, both directed by Peter Jackson, are set for theatrical release on December 14, 2012 and December 13, 2013, respectively. The films star Martin Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Christopher Lee, Orlando Bloom, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter, Aidan Turner, Peter Hambleton, John Callen, Jed Brophy, Mark Hadlow, Adam Brown, Ian Holm, Lee Pace, Dean O’Gorman, Elijah Wood, Evangeline Lilly, Barry Humphries and Benedict Cumberbatch.
