Andy Serkis (Gollum from The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) delivered an amazing CGI motion-capture performance as Caesar in this summer’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was a surprisingly great film altogether. When it made a whopping $453 million worldwide, 20th Century Fox knew that a sequel was in order, and that they needed to get Serkis to lead the ape revolt into future sequels, as he had originally only signed on for the first film.
Today, Fox’s wish became a reality, as Deadline is reporting that Andy Serkis has indeed officially signed on for further sequels. Read on for more!
Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt had already signed on to the first film with a sequel option, so he will be returning to direct the next film, and screenwriters Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa will return as well. The sequels are still in the planning stages, as only ideas have been thrown around at this point, and there is also no word on whether or not actors James Franco or Freida Pinto will return. Nevertheless, sequels will happen.
On another interesting note, Fox will be waging a campaign to get Andy Serkis an Oscar nod for next year, which he deserved to get when he played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy but never received. If he were to get nominated, it would be the first time an actor was ever nominated for a motion-capture performance. I’m sure he’ll get an Academy Award someday, even if it is simply a lifetime achievement award.
