Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield and Let Me In, has been hired by Warner Brothers to direct the film version of The Twilight Zone that Appian Way, Leonardo Dicaprio’s film company, has been working to get off the ground for a few years now. Apparently, other well-known directors were on Warner Brothers’ shortlist to direct, such as Christopher Nolan and Alfonso Cuaron, but Reeves apparently ended up being their final choice. Dicaprio, as well as his Appian Way partners, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Michael Ireland, are set to produce, with Warner Bros’ Matt Cherniss overseeing the project as executive producer. The script, based on the original 1960s Rod Serling TV series of the same name and penned by Jason Rothenberg, will not be an anthology of stories like the original 1983 feature film was, which brought on directors Steven Spielberg, John Landis, Joe Dante and George Miller to take on each story. According to Deadline, this new film will be “a big science fiction action movie with a single freestanding story that is linked to the original series mainly in that it shares that familiarly eerie feel.”
Reeves has been quite the up and coming director for the last few years now. After having fairly successful movies such as Cloverfield and Let Me In under his belt, he has also acquired quite a few other projects currently in development as well, including This Dark Endeavor, which is a revisionist take of the Frankenstein story. While he may not have been my first choice to direct, he certainly has gained some notoriety recently, and will probably work out quite well directing The Twilight Zone.
Personally, while I’m sure this film will be entertaining, I do find it somewhat disappointing that this will not be an anthology film. It is a long-lost genre that still has a significant audience, as was proven with the relatively successful straight-to-DVD film, Trick ‘r Treat. Nevertheless, I will still be in line opening weekend for the new Twilight Zone film. How about you?
