It looks like director Kevin Tancharoen‘s Mortal Kombat web series has paid off. It appears that his first unauthorized short film, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, as well as its corresponding web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, inadvertently acted as a kind of audition for directing a feature film reboot of the franchise (which first started out as a video game series, followed by a couple of disappointing feature films in the 90s). News hit yesterday via Deadline that New Line Cinema loved what Kevin Tancharoen did with the series, and ended up recruiting him, along with the original writer of the short film and web series, Oren Uziel for a new feature film. Hit the jump for more info, and to watch the Episode 9 of Tancharoen‘s Mortal Kombat: Legacy featuring Cyrax and Sektor (which I somehow completely missed when it debuted online)!
No word of any of the original actors from the web series will return, such as Michael Jai White as Jax or Jeri Ryan as Sonya, or whether or not the movie will have anything to do with the web series at all. But I think it’s a safe bet the new reboot will reflect the overall darker, more serious tone the series had. According to the LA Times, the goal is for the film to have a 2013 release to coincide with the release of the next Mortal Kombat video game. Sounds like a plan to me.
