For those of you who haven’t already heard, Leonard Nimoy has once again come out of retirement to take on various projects of interest. Today, EW broke the news that one such project is that of voicing the character of Sentinel Prime in director Michael Bay‘s Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Read on for further details!

From EW:

Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, has joined the film as the voice of Sentinel Prime, the predecessor of Optimus Prime whose wrecked body is seen in the teaser trailer, found crash-landed on the moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969. Later, after being brought to earth, he takes the disguise form of a fire engine in the movie’s massive, climactic battle through Chicago.

Nimoy has lent his voice to the world of Transformers once before, way back in 1986 as the voice of Galvatron in Transformers: The Movie. The article adds an interesting tidbit that Michael Bay originally wanted Nimoy for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, knowing of his previous involvement in the franchise, but was too scared to ask him because he thought he couldn’t pay him enough! Thankfully, Bay got enough courage this time around to ask him!

Transformers: Dark of the Moon, directed by Michael Bay, stars Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hugo Weaving, Josh Duhamel, John Malkovich, Patrick Dempsey, Tyrese Gibson, John Turturro, Leonard Nimoy, Frank Welker and Peter Cullen. The film hits theaters in 2-D and 3-D July 1st!
