Well this came out of nowhere.
Danny Boyle, who directed the hit film 28 Days Later, and also produced its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, is apparently planning on returning to the director’s chair for the third film in the series, which will, of course, most likely be titled 28 Months Later. Read on for more info!
Dread Central has allegedly gotten word from Boyle via a trusted third party source that there is indeed another 28 Days Later sequel in the works and that, in theory, the next film will be called 28 Months Later. When asked if he’d be back on board as producer, he supposedly replied, “Actually I want to direct it.” While this is all exciting, nothing official has been announced, so technically this should still be considered rumor.
In case you are unfamiliar with the plot of the first two films, the basic premise involves a virus called “rage” that gets loose in the UK and turns the majority of the population into what Dread Central calls “maniacal pissed off killers” that are “sort of like zombies, but not really.” The last film ended with the virus spreading to France.
Back in 2007, Boyle revealed a basic idea for the third film, according to /Film:
“It’s to do with Russia actually. It’s to do with that part of the world. NOT FRANCE. The second film hints that it gets to France eventually, and wipes out the French. But this third idea is actually more to do with Russia, but that’s actually all I can say. I don’t know whether it will happen.”
Is this still what he has in mind for the film? Only time will tell. Personally, I really like the idea and think Russia would be a great location choice for the story to take place in.
Currently, IMDb states that the film is slated to be released in 2011, but I have the feeling that this info is very much subject to change at the moment since nothing official has been announced.
Keep checking back for more updates as they come in.
Update: Shock ‘Till You Drop posted a follow-up on this story, saying that Danny Boyle has in fact addressed the recent rumblings of him returning to direct 28 Months Later at a screening of his new film, 127 Hours.
The article does in fact confirm that Boyle wants to direct the film. However, his schedule is very tight at the moment with not only taking on a stage play of Frankenstein, but also planning the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics. So it appears that he will not be available until at least after that’s all over with.
The article also goes on to say that there are other issues at hand as well concerning the rights to the franchise, which you can read all about here. In a nutshell, it sounds like no one can make the third film until this matter is resolved.
Be that as it may, Boyle does say that if the fan demand is there, it will most likely happen – eventually. So that’s at least some mildly good news. I actually have no problem waiting, but I also wouldn’t have a problem if he just produced again and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo hopped back on board to direct, as I thought he did a great job directing 28 Weeks Later.
