According to Deadline, Emma Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Stranger Than Fiction) is in final negotiations to join the cast of Men in Black 3, which also stars Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. The film will once again be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, and is slated to hit theaters in 2D and 3D on May 25, 2012.
Possible Spoilers:
Reports have been sort of scattered as to what her role in the film is exactly. THR reports that she is playing “take-charge MIB operative ‘Agent Oh,’ who is monitoring a prison breakout.” However, Deadline seems to go further in saying that she is “the head of MIB.” If Deadline‘s description of her role is accurate, then what does this mean for Rip Torn, who played the head of MIB in the previous two films?
Since the film is said to involve Agent Jay (Will Smith) time-traveling back to 1969 to visit a younger version of Agent Kay (Josh Brolin), it has been speculated that Thompson is playing the head of MIB back in 1969, which would still leave the role open for Rip Torn as head of MIB in the present. It is also possible she is replacing Torn entirely. We’ll just have to keep our eyes open for more official details as they develop.
