Most B-movie fans are fully aware of the works of legendary filmmaker Roger Corman, particularly his American International Edgar Allen Poe adaptations with Vincent Price like House of Usher and Pit and the Pendulum. Others might know him more as the producer of such films as Piranha (1978) or Death Race. Regardless of how you know of the fellow, it is clear that he knows he way around the B-genre.
So, if you’re like me and you love just listening to Corman talk, you need to check out this five-part interview on FEARnet’s Post Mortem with Mick Garris, which debuted August 2nd. It will also premiere on Video on Demand (VOD) August 9th. A wide variety of interesting topics is covered in the interview so I highly recommend it for genre fans. Official FEARnet Press Release:
Legendary Filmmaker Roger Corman
Featured on FEARnet’s “Post Mortem with Mick Garris”
Conversation covers Coppola, Scorsese and Cameron;
The Hell’s Angels, and the Death of Independent Filmmaking
Los Angeles, CA, August 2, 2010 – FEARnet, the world’s premier destination for horror, thriller and suspense movies, will soon feature an in-depth interview with genre legend Roger Corman (“Piranha,” “Little Shop of Horrors, “ and “Death Race”) on “Post Mortem with Mick Garris.” Award-winning filmmaker Mick Garris, host of the signature series on the network, recently sat down with his old friend Corman to discuss his hall-of-fame horror career.
The five-part interview will be available on FEARnet.com on August 2, 2010 and on Video on Demand (VOD) on August 9th, timed closely with August’s theatrical release of “Piranha 3D.” In the interview, Garris and Corman discuss Corman’s extensive career; the wildest things he has done; what truly scares people; Corman protégés Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and James Cameron, and the death of independent film.
Highlights of the interview include Corman’s comments on…:
…the role of the horror filmmaker:
“All those childhood fears lay buried in our unconscious mind. As we grow older, we realize there’s nothing to worry about, but the unconscious mind does not know that, so it’s the job of the filmmaker to break through the barrier of the conscious mind, and strike that fear in the unconscious mind.”
… what he saw in the legendary directors, whose careers he helped launch
(among them, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron and Ron Howard):
“Three things. One, that the filmmaker is intelligent. To have a series of successes over a period of time, you’ve got to be bright. The second thing is you have to be willing to work hard. The third thing is the intangible: how creative they are.”
… why he took on “Wild Angels,” the biker gang horror project that lead to the Hell’s Angeles motorcycle gang suing him AND threatening his life:
“I wanted to do something that reflects some rebelliousness, and the Hell’s Angels were in every newspaper they were so wild.”
The interview also includes a wistful exchange between Corman and Garris about how changes in the movie business have made it hard for independent films and filmmakers to succeed today.
Corman is the latest subject for Mick Garris, whose “Post Mortem” has bolstered his reputation as “the Charlie Rose of the blood and guts set.” Other recent interviews have included Wes Craven, Rick Baker, and Roger Englund. The entire “Post Mortem with Mick Garris” collection can be found here.
Viewers can also watch 1978 Fantasy Festival interviews with Mick Garris and Corman or “Piranha” director Joe Dante in the “Post Mortem” archives here. On August 2nd, FEARnet will feature on the site a list of “The Craziest Corman Scenes” with 13 classic Corman-style movie scenes.
