What’s this? Mulder and Scully to encounter the vampires of Barrow, Alaska? Yes, you read that right. No, this is not a movie (unfortunately), but rather a comic book crossover series called The X-Files/30 Days of Night, which was revealed this past weekend at the C2E2 Convention.
MTV writes:
“Written by ’30 Days of Night’ co-creator Steve Niles and Adam Jones, guitarist for the band Tool, the six-issue series will send FBI Agents Mulder and Scully to Alaska just in time for the long season of darkness to take over the region. While investigating a strange murder, the pair discover (as usual) that all is not what it seems in the case.”
MTV adds that artist Tom Mandrake (The Spectre) is providing the interior art for the series, and that the series pairs DC Comics’ Wildstorm imprint with 30 Days of Night publishers IDW Publishing.
For those of you unaware, 30 Days of Night was a feature film that was released in 2007 that was based on a comic book mini-series of the same name, written by Steve Niles and illustrated by Ben Templesmith. The story took place in Barrow, Alaska, a small town where the sun does not rise for a 30-day period. Vampires, being vulnerable to sunlight, take advantage of this and feed upon the town’s inhabitants for the duration of that period of darkness.
Now it looks like the story will continue in comic book form with Mulder and Scully on the scene! Not sure if it will take place before, during or after the original 30 Days comics. Whatever the case, this is one great crossover idea, and I will definitely be giving it a read!
The X-Files/30 Days of Night is slated to arrive on shelves this July.
Update: Check out these comments from Niles and Mandrake on The X-Files/30 Day of Night Crossover from Wildstorm:
“I’m a huge X-Files fan and when the cross-over was presented to me, I lunged at the chance. It’s actually a very good match, I think because the vampires in 30 Days have a real-world feel to them, they are not effected by crossed or garlic or any of the common folklore which lends itself nicely to the X-Files universe. And getting a chance to work with Adam Jones is amazing. He’s a pal, but I am also a huge fan of TOOL, as well as his video work for the band; not to mention the special effects he did at Stan Winstons before he became a rock star. He came up with the hook that really made this story come together.”
– Steve Niles
“I’ve been an X-Files fan from the very first episode and have always wanted to illustrate a story featuring Scully and Mulder. I’m also a huge fan of Steve Niles and 30 Days of Night. What could be a better project for a horror fan like myself than pitting the X-File’s best agents against relentless vampires in the frozen North? Steve Niles and Adam Jones have collaborated to mesh both concepts together to give me a chance to draw the stuff I love to draw best– my favorite FBI agents, vampires and dark, bloody horror.” – Tom Mandrake
