Back in November, it was reported that Roland Emmerich has been cooking up some ideas for not only one sequel to his 1996 blockbuster hit Independence Day, but rather two sequels that would take place over a decade later after the first film.
Well, according to IESB, Will Smith is apparently locked in for the sequels. Although it has not been officially announced, IESB has been known for being quite accurate.
According to the report, Roland Emmerich will go into production on the two Independence Day sequels, shooting them back-to-back, after he finishes his William Shakespeare thriller Anonymous – which is approximately when Will Smith would be done with filming either Men in Black 3 or The City that Sailed.
/Film pointed out that these sequels would most likely take place in a world where the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 never happened, and that July 4, 1996 (when the first film took place) would be remembered as “that day.” I actually think that is an interesting premise.
Whatever the case, I’ll be in line for these movies if they do happen, since I absolutely loved the first film back in ’96.
