After recent reports that The Dark Knight director, Christopher Nolan, is shepherding (not directing, but rather overseeing) the next Superman film from Warner Brothers and DC Comics, we have now learned from Latino Review that David Goyer (writing consultant for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) has been hired to pen the next Superman film entitled The Man of Steel!
Here’s a juicy tidbit from the Latino Review article:
“Goyer’s story involves Luthor and Brainiac. It is not an origin and assumes audiences already know about Lois, Clark, Jimmy and Perry. I know the Daily Planet is struggling due to the internet. And I know it sets up a huge Kryptonian mythology.”
Sounds cool to me! Unfortunately the article confirms that Brandon Routh will not be returning to play the role of Superman/Clark Kent and that Superman Returns director, Bryan Singer, is not expected to direct.
However, while it appears that the next film will go in a new direction, it is not confirmed whether or not this will be a sequel to Superman Returns or a “reboot” like what has been discussed in the past. It also does not confirm whether or not Kevin Spacey will return to play Luthor (I really hope he does!).
I am kind of hoping that this film will just be a sequel that simply takes place after Superman Returns, as a reboot just seems silly to me this soon in the game. Personally, I think having Superman’s son, Jason White, die early on in the movie would be a great dramatic element to add to Kal-El’s story. Perhaps Brainiac or Luthor (or both) could find a way to kill the son, creating a much more tougher, angrier Man of Steel?
