During James Cameron’s Avatar premiere in L.A. last night, Bryan Singer, director of X-Men and X2: X-Men United, was in attendance and revealed that he will be directing X-Men: First Class!
Here is what Singer had to say:
“I’m ramping up to do a movie called ‘Jack the Giant Killer’ at Warner Bros, and I just yesterday signed a deal to do an ‘X-Men: First Class Origins’ picture, which is kind of cool. I’m very excited.”
Very cool. As you are probably aware, the first two X-Men films are highly regarded by most comic book fans as the best films of the X-Men franchise, especially X2. After an “okay” X-Men: The Last Stand and a “so-so” X-Men Origins: Wolverine, this makes me very happy since X2 is one of my most favorite comic book movies of all time.

Update: Bryan Singer has talked to Variety a little more about X-Men: First Class. Here is what he had to say:
“This is the formative years of Xavier and Magneto, and the formation of the school and where there relationship took a wrong turn. There is a romantic element, and some of the mutants from ‘X-Men’ will figure into the plot, though I don’t want to say which ones. There will be a lot of new mutants and a great villain.”
“Whether it’s ‘Batman,’ ‘Lord of the Rings’ or ‘Star Trek,’ if the characters are good, you want to see them on their journey even if you know their destiny. I put myself in the fan’s position, and I think this story is something I would want to see, and so will they.”
This has me really pumped for the film. Bryan Singer, I applaud you for stepping in. Hopefully you can breathe some life back into this franchise!
