Now this is news. Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, the original classic from 1981 that spawned two sequels (Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness), will be re-released in select theaters next year as a midnight movie!
Sam Raimi and producers Robert Tapert and Bruce Campell all gave their stamp of approval for The Evil Dead theatrical revival. Campell, who also played “Ash” from The Evil Dead series, had this to say on the matter:
“Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead – especially on the big screen. I’m really glad it’s back. People are gonna be hurt.”
Landmark Theaters in the U.S., and Canada’s Mayfair Cinema will be screening the film sometime next year, as well as other locations yet to be announced in early 2010.
I first saw Army of Darkness in the theater when I was 12. At that time I had no idea that it was actually the third movie in a series, so you can imagine my enthusiasm when I found this out years later!
I wound up buying all three movies on VHS (finding out that Evil Dead 2 was essentially just a much needed remake of the first film), then later replacing them with the superior DVDs with wonderful bonus features that brought me up to speed on what went into actually making these cult classics. Now, nearly twenty years after Army of Darkness was released in theaters, I am a die-hard Evil Dead (and Bruce Campell) fan – especially after finding out how much my home state of Michigan was involved in bringing the series to life!
My hope is that this gets a really good turnout and Raimi will get going on making Evil Dead IV. Most people don’t want the long-rumored Evil Dead remake (although imdb.com says it is still being released next year) and everyone wants a fourth film with Bruce Campell playing Ash again. Sam Raimi has said that he and his brother, Ivan Raimi have started brainstorming ideas for the fourth, and it’s pretty black and white amongst fans of the Evil Dead series that we all want a fourth – so come on already!
