July 30, 2009 marked the 10th anniversary of The Blair Witch Project, so it comes as no surprise that people are talking about the film again as well as ideas that creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez have for a possible third film. They have always talked about the idea of making a prequel taking place in the 18th century dealing with the actual witch hunt, but now it looks like a sequel may happen instead.
Here’s what Eduardo Sánchez had to say about the matter:
“We would still love to make that prequel idea,” Sánchez told Shock. “We actually talked to Lionsgate about it four or five years ago. But they were very hesitant to do a prequel, because it’s a period piece and they haven’t had much luck with horror period pieces, and also the period would’ve made it a bit too expensive.”
“However, right now, Dan (Myrick) and I are actually working on an idea for a Blair Witch sequel,” says Sánchez. “It’s the first time that Dan and I have really gelled on an idea for a follow-up. We have a bunch of ideas for the prequel that date back to the beginning of the legend, but this is the first time we’ve gotten together and really loved what we’re coming up with.”
The first Blair Witch film is great if you watch it alone at night in the dark with the sound turned up. It is a legitimately frightening film when viewed properly (as opposed to viewing it with a group of friends who talk or laugh during the movie). But as far as the second film goes, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, I think it sucked big time.
The idea of a prequel sounds much better to me than a sequel, since I love horror period pieces and I didn’t enjoy the first sequel. But it doesn’t look like that will happen right now. So, if they do make another direct sequel, it would have to have a much better story than Book of Shadows did to be worthy of the original film. Let’s hope they do it right this time.
Sánchez says in the article that they should have some sort of news by the end of the year about whether or not they are moving forward with the third film.
