According to Shock ‘Till You Drop, The Wolf Man remake directed by Joe Johnston starring Benicio Del Toro has been pushed back from November 6th of this year to February 12, 2010.
You may recall that this is the third time this movie has been pushed back. Originally, it was to be released last February and got pushed back to April. This means that after all the push backs it is being released a year later than originally planned. Perhaps this shift is due to the switching of directors a month before the movie starting filming (Mark Romanek was originally set to direct) and Joe Johnston making a mess of the movie in the eyes of Universal Studios? After all, February is typically not the month you want to be releasing movies in. Typically, crap gets released then. Normally, the good stuff gets released in late spring and summer as well as in the late fall and Christmas season. But, there are exceptions and this could just be due to the last minute FX work and various changes that were done recently and it has simply caused the movie to fall behind.
Hopefully this is just the crew trying to get everything right and they need more time. I love the original Wolf Man with Lon Chaney Jr., and I hope this film does it justice. I am completely fine with pushing a release date back to perfect a movie. But the February release date makes me a little nervous. However, this might make room for this movie to make a lot of money and bring on the Creature From the Black Lagoon and Invisible Man remakes that I want.
Update: Universal has commented on why the release date for The Wolf Man was pushed back. Being released on November 6th would have put the film up against Disney’s A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey – which is expected to do very well considering Robert Zemekis is directing it, it is a motion-captured CG-animated film and Christmas movies tend to dominate in November and December. Releasing The Wolf Man in February give the film little competition at the box office. Also, we’ll be getting a Wolf Man trailer with Inglourious Bastards on August 21st!
