Atlas Entertainment, the producers of The Dark Knight (the greatest comic-book movie ever made), have acquired the rights to make the live-action Voltron movie based on the popular Japanese Anime cartoon from the 1980s.
This project has been in development since 2004, and recently gained momentum after the success of Transformers in 2007. Screen writer Justin Marks wrote a screenplay for the film adapting it as “an alien invasion film based on earth” when the film was with New Regency. It has also been described as “a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico” about “five ragtag survivors of an alien attack [who] band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth’s invaders.”
One of the producers of the film talked with Risky Biz about the project, saying, “unlike other robotic action movies, ‘Voltron’ is the personification of the human spirit, a quality that will set this movie apart.”
Currently, Voltron is not set up with any particular studio, but /Film thinks it’ll end up with Warner Brothers since Atlas Entertainment has an overall deal with them. However, WB is currently developing another big robot movie – Robotech, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens if they do pick up Voltron.
It is theorized that the script that Justin Marks penned has been abandoned since the transition from New Regency (after that it was briefly with Relativity Media) to Atlas Entertainment. LatinoReview and CinemaBlend both gave the original script rave reviews.
I loved Voltron as a kid, and I’ve been following the news of a live-action version since the beginning. I must close this article by saying that just because the producers of The Dark Knight are producing Voltron doesn’t mean it’ll be good. But it can’t hurt, right? I can’t wait!
