There is an interview with the BBC where Shia LaBeouf (Mutt Williams from Indiana Jones 4) claims that work has begun on the next Indiana Jones film. When asked about it, he said:
“Steven [Spielberg] just said that he cracked the story on it, I think they’re gearing that up”
Both Spielberg and George Lucas have stated that a fifth one is not out of the question, so it is entirely plausible that LaBeouf has his facts straight. But I wouldn’t call this an official announcement. For all we know, they have a story idea and that’s it. But hey, it’s better than nothing.
Personally, while I thought the newest Indiana Jones was a bit flawed, I enjoyed it as much as Temple of Doom. It holds up with repeated viewings for me and actually gets better every time I watch it.
I do hope, however, that they tone down the ridiculousness of it all with the next one. Sure, it is all fantasy but Crystal Skull I think was a bit too much in some areas. There needs to be a supernatural artifact of some sort, but I think they should keep it in the fantasy realm rather than sci-fi. [Spoiler] I will give them credit that inter-dimentional beings can be considered fantasy since heaven and hell are often thought of by people of faith as different dimensions and that God and Satan are from those very dimensions. So these inter-dimentional beings can be looked at as gods. The film deals with a belief system, just like the last three films did. But did we really need a flying saucer? Did we really need to see the inter-dimensional beings? Perhaps the beings could have been more hidden in shadow rather than fully shown.
I love the old 50s sci-fi movies that inspired the saucer and don’t mind the scene, but I felt that it was a bit overkill – even for an Indy movie.
What do you think the next supernatural artifact should be? Personally, I don’t have any ideas.
Update: Well, looks like my suspicions were correct. Indy 5 is not that far along in development at all, according to Frank Marshall, the producer of the last four Indiana Jones films. On his Twitter page, he had this to say:
The story for Indy5 is still progressing. It is still in the research phase.
They don’t even have a script yet. But the idea for the film is being looked into. Here’s what he had to say to Empire Online:
“It’s really about the script,” says the veteran Indy producer. “Once we see that, we’ll see. We’re not going to wait another 20 years. We’d all love to make another one. I’m anxious to hear the idea!” “Until there’s a script, nothing’s definite. I haven’t heard the idea.”
When asked about whether or not Spielberg, Lucas and Ford want to make it, he said:
“Yeah. We had a great time making the last one and, as Harrison said, we need to make this one soon. We’re not getting any younger.”
So, if a script gets penned, my guess is that we’re about three or four years out from seeing another Indiana Jones film. Harrison Ford is 67 years old this year, so they have to move quickly (unlike last time where it took them forever to all agree on a script). But it does look like they are going to revisit Indy for at least one more outing.
