It was rumored a few months ago that Robert Rodriguez (director of such films as The Faculty, Sin City and Planet Terror) is rebooting the Predator franchise and calling it Predators. Well, IESB.Net is reporting that this has been confirmed at a press conference in Austin, Texas. Not only is Rodriguez slated to produce, but also to direct [see Update below]. The synopsis of the new film is as follows:
“In the reboot a team of commandoes face down a mysterious race of vicious monsters.”
Okay, not much of a synopsis. But seriously, how exciting is this?! I really hope the Predator franchise gets the reboot it deserves. With the lackluster Alien VS Predator films not quite delivering like they should have, it’s about time. I actually dig the first AVP film, although it should’ve been rated R and more violent. But I think Rodriquez can give the Predator franchise the edge it needs to bring it back to the quality story-telling that the original 1987 film had.

Update: ERC Box Office is reporting that Rodriguez will not be directing Predators, just producing. Meh, this is not as good of a news report as it was yesterday. But I’m glad he is still on board to have some hand in the project. The good news is that it is set to be released July 7, 2010!
Update 2: Aint It Cool News has posted an interview with Rodriguez himself, answering questions about his treatment for Predators.
